A Maya figure with a feathered headdress, oar in hand, travels seated in a boat beside a deity. For the ancient Maya, navigation symbolized the passage to the afterlife: bones engraved for the burial of an eighth-century ruler of Tikal show gods paddling a canoe toward the underworld. Banús revisits that image with the meticulous pen work that marks his inks.
